What is adverb?

The Adverb 










- An adverb is a word that qualifies a verb, another adverb, an adjective, a preposition, etc. 



Qualifying verb

- Ravi drives fast.


Qualifying an adjective

-Ravi has very beautiful drawings.


Qualifying a preposition

-    A glass was dropped-down the table. 

-    My ball was stumbled-down the field.


Qualifying another adverb

-The doctor drops here very seldom.

-Our teacher used to come very late in class.


There are 3 types of adverbs.

1- Simple


  1.  Adverb of time- it shows when

Examples

now, then, sometime, late, later, before, already, ever, always, early, just, tomorrow, yesterday, day after tomorrow, the day before yesterday, last day,  next day, immediately, instantly. quickly, abruptly, 


e.g.

1- I'm doing my English class now.

2- I will talk to you later.

3- they reached here late. 

4- have you seen ever this much crowd in the market?

5- I read novels always. 

6- I go market daily.

7- I've eaten my breakfast already.

8- His bag was not lost any time before.

9-  They were asking about it yesterday.

10- you can also make such examples the next day.




2.  Adverb of place- It shows where


Examples

here, there, somewhere, everywhere, elsewhere, near, far, up, down, forward, backward, upward, toward, towards, outside, inside, below, above, hither, thither, 


e.g.

1-They will play here.

2- We shall go there.

3- He went somewhere.

4- the snow is falling everywhere.

5- I'll keep my books elsewhere.

6- Ram is waiting near.

7- They live very far from here.

8- Nita lives upside.

9- Who went outside.

10- They must come down.




3.     Adverb of manner- it shows how


Examples

easily, heavily, slowly, fastly, comfortably, knowingly, deliberately, diversely, concentratively, adhesively, gracefully, beautifully, aggressively, immensely, typically, thankfully, cheerfully, doubtfully, respectively, clearly, wisely, actively, obviously.


e.g.

1- I'll do this work easily.

2- It was raining heavily.

3- I'll go home slowly.

4- They will ride fastly.

5- Do give your exam comfortably.




4.     Adverb of frequency- it shows how often


Examples

seldom, repeatedly, sometimes, always, frequently, weekly, hourly, daily, yearly, half-yearly, quarterly, mostly, never.


e.g. 

1- I'm doing work seldom.

2- They came here mostly.

3- She asked me repeatedly.

4- They have completed their work daily.

5- I'll come here weekly.



5.     Adverb of degree/quality- It shows intensity, concentration or even the depth  of a particular action.


Examples

naturally, obviously, immensely, greatly, totally, utterly, almost, barely, entirely, highly, quite, slightly, purely, completely, typically, brightly, wishfully, dearly, widely, temporarily, permanently, sincerely, bitterly, forcefully, maternally, paternally, gracefully, hugely. abnormally, normally, extremely


e.g.

1- They will stop naturally. 

2- I will come there obviously.

3- She will fight immensely. 

4- Our soldiers will fight greatly.

5- They will refuse totally.







6. Adverb of cause or Reason 

Adverb of cause or reason are introduced by the subordinating conjunctions like- because, as, since and that.


Examples: 
1- I sing because I like singing.

2- He thinks he can get anything because he is rich.

3- Since he has apologized we will take no further action against him.

4- As he was not there I left a message with his mother.

5- I am glad that you have come.

6- My parents were disappointed that I didn’t get the scholarship.

7- He was furious that his book was panned by most reviewers.




7.     Adverb of affirmation- It shows acceptation


Examples

definitely, certainly, yes, yeap, exactly, truly, determinedly, surely, obviously. 


e.g.

1- I'll go there definitely.

2- Ram will play certainly.

3- yes, I'll go there soon.



8.     Adverb of negation- It shows negation.


Examples

not, no, never, nevertheless, nevertheless, not at all.


e.g.

1- Don't touch my book, I don't allow anybody.

2- No, I'm not going there.

3- I've never tried to be over-smart

Where, When, Why, how, etc

  1.  Where are you going nowadays?
  2. When did you live there?
  3. Why have you listed our names?
  4. How do you know this question?
  5. When will the movie end?

  1. The seat where we sat last day is still free.
  2. My bag left here that's why I return.
  3. It's the reason why I left him.
