Main Clause or Independent Clause –
A main clause is a group of words with a subject and a verb. It is one that can stand alone and makes complete sense. That is why it is called an independent clause.
Subordinate Clause or Dependent Clause–
A subordinate clause is a group of words that consists of a subject, a verb and a subordinating conjunction or a relative pronoun. Unlike main clauses, subordinate clauses cannot stand alone or convey complete meaning when taken separately from the sentence it is a part of. Dependent clauses can be divided into types based on their function.
The types of dependent clauses are -
- noun clauses, Ex- Please tell me who came to the party. I can't tell you where he lives.
- adjective clauses, Ex- the cat that john saw yesterday was in the kitech earlier. The people who live in the next door are very good nieghbours.
- adverb clauses, Ex- he eats vegetable in order to stay healthy. After the chores are done, we will eat icecream.
- conditional clauses, Ex-If I had known you were coming I would have baked a cake. If I go market, I'll buy what you want.
- relative clauses, Ex- They live in a house which/whose roof is full of holes. An elephant is an animal which/that lives in hot countries.
- comparative clauses, Ex-Mary is happier than I am. It travels faster than you could expect.
- verbless clauses Ex- Class running, I bought a board online. Great thing to do. Whether a fact or not, It is believed.
- complementary clauses.Ex-Cordially. Yours truely. Sincerly.
